Bengaluru is one of the largest garment export centres in Asia. Hundreds of units around Peenya, Bommanahalli, Hosur Road, Mysore Road and Doddaballapur cut and stitch shirts, trousers, dresses and casualwear for international brands every day. For many of those programmes the buyer’s tech pack now specifies real shell or mother-of-pearl buttons rather than polyester. If you run merchandising or sourcing for a Bengaluru factory, this guide explains how to buy natural sea shell buttons in bulk, what to check before you approve a lot, and how to order directly from a manufacturer instead of going through several traders.
Why export buyers ask for shell buttons
A shell button is cut from the hard, layered inner wall of a sea shell — the same iridescent material known as mother of pearl, or seep / sipi in Hindi. Compared with a plastic button it has a cool, heavier feel, a natural lustre that changes with the light, and slight variation from piece to piece. On a premium shirt those details are noticed by the end customer, which is why many European, American and Japanese labels insist on natural buttons for their better lines. For a Bengaluru exporter, supplying the correct natural trim is part of passing the buyer’s inspection, so the button supplier matters as much as the fabric mill.
Shell is also a natural, biodegradable material. Brands with sustainability targets increasingly prefer it over petroleum-based buttons, and some ask for it specifically in their trim sheets.
What Bengaluru units typically order
- Shirt buttons, 16L to 20L (about 10 mm to 12.7 mm) — the workhorse sizes for front plackets, with 14L for collars and cuffs.
- 2-hole and 4-hole — 4-hole for classic formal shirts, 2-hole for casual and fashion styles.
- 24L and larger (15 mm and up) for overshirts, dresses, cardigans and light jackets.
- White mother-of-pearl for formal and white shirting; natural cream shell for linen, chambray and earthy colourways.
Our standard range runs from 14L to 36L (roughly 9 mm to 23 mm). If your buyer’s spec sheet gives a size in millimetres only, send it to us and we will match it to the nearest ligne or cut it to size.
Matching lots: the part that actually causes rejections
Most problems with natural buttons in production are not about quality of a single piece; they are about consistency across a lot. A shirt with one bright white button and one creamy one next to it will fail inspection. Because shell is natural, every lot needs sorting by shade and thickness. At our unit, buttons are cut, drilled, shaped and polished, then sorted so a full production order stays visually even. When you place a repeat order, tell us the previous lot details and we will match against it.
Before approving any shell button supplier, ask for samples of the exact size, hole type and shade, and check:
- diameter and thickness against the tech pack (a vernier caliper is enough);
- clean, centred holes with no chipping, so needles do not break on button-attaching machines;
- an even polish on both faces and a smooth rim;
- shade variation within an acceptable range for your buyer.
Beyond buttons: top-hole shell discs
Some womenswear and kidswear programmes use shell discs with a single hole near the edge as hanging trims, tag charms or tassel ends. We make top-hole shell discs from the same sea shell as our buttons, so the colour story stays consistent across a collection.
Frequently asked questions
Are your buttons real shell or plastic that looks like shell?
Real. Every button is cut from natural sea shell and finished in our own unit. We do not sell resin or polyester imitations as shell.
Can you supply buttons that pass international buyer inspection?
We sort every order for size, thickness and shade and can supply samples for buyer approval before production. Final acceptance is always based on your buyer’s standard, so we recommend approving samples first.
How are buttons delivered to Bengaluru?
Samples and small lots go by courier; bulk orders go by courier or transport, with freight quoted along with your order.
Whether you need a few thousand 18L shirt buttons for a sample programme or a recurring monthly requirement, call +91-9199770786 and talk to the manufacturer directly.
