Mother of pearl (MOP) is the lustrous inner layer of certain shells. When it is cut and polished into a button, it keeps a soft, shifting iridescence that changes with the light — something a moulded plastic button cannot reproduce. Because the pattern comes from the shell itself, no two buttons are exactly alike.

MOP buttons are a popular choice on premium shirts, blouses, tailored pieces and cardigans, where the button is meant to be noticed quietly. Smaller sizes (around 14L–20L) are typically used on shirt fronts, collars and cuffs; mid sizes suit cardigans and jackets. As always, test a few on your actual fabric before committing.
