Ask three suppliers in Bengaluru for a price on “18L shell buttons” and you may get three very different numbers. That is not always because someone is overcharging; natural shell buttons vary much more than plastic ones, and a short description hides many details that change the cost. This guide explains, in plain language, what decides the price of sea shell and mother-of-pearl buttons, so that Bengaluru garment buyers can compare quotes fairly and get the best value for their programme.

1. Material: which shell, and which part of it

“Shell button” covers several materials. Bright white mother of pearl, natural cream river or sea shell and mixed natural shades come from different shells with different availability. Even within one shell, the brightest, most even material is limited, so buttons cut from it cost more. When comparing quotes, make sure everyone is quoting the same material and shade — a lower price for a different shade is not a saving if your buyer rejects it.

2. Size

Larger buttons need larger, thicker pieces of shell, and fewer of them can be cut from each shell. A 24L button therefore costs noticeably more than an 18L, and a 32L more again. Small sizes such as 14L are cheaper per piece, but they still require the same drilling and polishing steps, so the price does not fall in proportion to size.

3. Thickness

Thicker buttons use more material and can only be cut from thicker parts of the shell. Premium formal shirts often specify a thicker button for its luxurious feel; that choice affects price. If your buyer has not specified thickness, ask before you compare quotes — a cheap quote for a thin button is not comparable with one for a thick button.

4. Grade: shade and clarity

After cutting and polishing, buttons are sorted. The brightest, most even, flaw-free pieces form the top grade; pieces with more natural markings or colour variation form lower grades. For a white formal shirt you need a tight, high grade; for a casual linen shirt, a natural mixed grade can look excellent and costs less. Choosing the right grade for each style is one of the easiest ways to control cost without hurting the product.

5. Shape, face and finish

A simple flat 2-hole button is the most economical. Raised rims, dished centres, special edges, carving or a mirror-like high polish all add work. If a buyer specifies a particular profile, it will be reflected in the price, so it is worth confirming whether that detail is truly required.

6. Holes

A 4-hole button needs more drilling than a 2-hole one. Special hole pitches or shank styles add further steps. The difference per piece is small but adds up across large programmes.

7. Quantity and size breakdown

Like most manufactured goods, shell buttons cost less per piece in larger quantities. Setting up cutting, drilling, polishing and sorting for one size takes time, so an order of many sizes in small quantities costs more per piece than the same total in one or two sizes. Grouping programmes and planning reorders can lower your average price.

8. Custom work

Custom diameters, non-standard thickness, special finishes or matching an existing button exactly involve extra setup and sampling. On larger bulk orders the effect per piece is modest; on small runs it is more noticeable.

9. Freight and packing

Shell is heavier than plastic, so freight to Bengaluru should be considered in the landed cost. Ask whether a quote includes freight, and how buttons will be packed — sorted by size and shade in labelled packets saves time in your trims store.

How to get comparable quotes

To compare suppliers fairly, send everyone the same specification: material and shade, size in ligne and mm, thickness, hole type, face/rim, finish, grade (ideally against a physical sample) and quantity per size. Then compare samples side by side, not just numbers on paper. The cheapest quote that fails inspection is the most expensive one.

Where real savings come from

  • Right grade for each style — premium grade only where it shows.
  • Fewer sizes — standardise collar and cuff sizes across programmes.
  • Planned reorders — larger, less frequent orders of the same spec.
  • Buying direct — every trader in the chain adds a margin.

A worked example: comparing two quotes

Imagine two suppliers quote for “18L 4-hole white shell buttons”. Supplier A is cheaper. Before choosing, check the samples: if A’s buttons are 1.6 mm thick with a lower, more mixed grade and B’s are 2.2 mm thick in a tight bright grade, they are simply different products. Ask A to quote B’s specification, or ask B to quote A’s, and you will usually find the gap narrows sharply. Only then is the comparison fair.

FAQs

Why don’t you publish a fixed price list?

Because the factors above change the price so much that a single list would mislead. A quote based on your actual spec and quantity is accurate and usually quick.

Is cheaper shell always lower quality?

Not necessarily — it may simply be a different grade or thickness. Compare samples against your requirement.
