Chennai — still called Madras by many in the trade — is one of India’s most important export garment centres. Units across Ambattur, Guindy, Thiruvottiyur, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and the surrounding industrial belts make woven shirts, blouses, dresses and leather garments for buyers in Europe, the US and beyond. Those buyers frequently specify natural shell or mother-of-pearl buttons in their tech packs. This guide is written for merchandisers and sourcing teams in Chennai who want to buy natural buttons in bulk, directly from a manufacturer.
Reading the trim line in a tech pack
A typical trim sheet line might say “Button: MOP, 18L, 4H, white, polished, 1.8 mm”. Breaking that down: MOP means mother of pearl (real shell); 18L is the ligne size, about 11.4 mm; 4H is four holes; then shade, finish and thickness. Some buyers write only the diameter in millimetres. Send us the exact line, or a photo of the approved trim card, and we will quote the matching button from our 14L–36L range or cut a custom size.
Common specifications for Chennai units
- Men’s woven shirts: 18L 4-hole white MOP on the front, 14L–16L on collar, cuffs and sleeve plackets.
- Women’s blouses and dresses: 14L–18L, often 2-hole, white or natural cream.
- Overshirts and light jackets: 24L–28L in natural shell.
- Kidswear: smaller, smooth-edged buttons in 14L–16L.
- Decorative trims: single top-hole shell discs as charms and hanging details.
Passing inspection with natural buttons
Natural shell varies, and that is part of its appeal — but buyers still expect a garment to look consistent. Inspections usually look at three things: shade consistency across a garment and across a carton, dimensions against the spec, and attachment security, which depends on clean, centred holes and correct thickness. At our unit, every lot is cut, drilled, shaped, polished and then sorted for shade and thickness, so that a production run stays even. We recommend sending approved samples to your buyer before bulk production.
Machine attaching
Most Chennai export units use automatic button-sewing machines. Buttons that vary in thickness or have off-centre holes cause needle breakage and slow lines down. Real shell is harder than plastic, so precise drilling matters even more. Our buttons are drilled to keep holes centred and smooth; if your machines need a specific hole spacing, tell us and we can make it on bulk orders.
Sustainability and buyer requirements
More and more brands sourcing from Tamil Nadu have sustainability targets. Natural shell is a biodegradable material, and many buyers prefer it to petroleum-based polyester buttons. If your buyer asks for material declarations or details for their compliance paperwork, ask us — we will share what we can about the material and process.
Custom and repeat programmes
For continuing programmes, we can hold your specification and lot reference so that every reorder is matched. On bulk orders we can also make custom diameters, thickness, hole spacing and finishes, subject to feasibility. See custom shell buttons and mother-of-pearl buttons manufacturer.
Planning trim in-house dates
Export merchandisers in Chennai know that a late trim can hold up an entire shipment. Natural buttons need a little more planning than stock plastic: samples have to be approved, the lot has to be sorted for shade, and the buyer may want to see the button on a pre-production sample. We suggest locking the button specification at the proto or fit-sample stage, approving shade samples alongside your lab dips, and placing the bulk order as soon as the purchase order is confirmed. Share your required in-house date when you ask for a quote and we will confirm whether the lead time works for your programme. For repeat programmes, keeping a running order with fixed specifications removes the approval step altogether and keeps your lines moving.
Leather garments and outerwear
Chennai is also known for leather garments. Larger 28L–36L shell buttons can be a striking alternative to horn or metal on leather jackets and outerwear. Ask us about thicker cuts suitable for heavier materials.
