In Surat’s garment markets you will rarely hear anyone say “mother-of-pearl button”. The everyday words are seep ke button or sipi button — buttons made from sea shell. As Surat’s kurta, kurti and co-ord set makers move from basic to premium ranges, seep buttons have become one of the simplest ways to make a garment look and feel more expensive. This guide covers how to choose the right seep buttons for each style and how to buy them wholesale, directly from a manufacturer.
What exactly is a seep button?
A seep button is cut from the hard, shiny inner layer of a natural shell. It is drilled, shaped and polished until it has a soft, pearly shine. Because it is natural, each button is slightly different in pattern and shade — that is how customers recognise the real thing. Many “pearl” buttons in the market are actually polyester made to look like shell; they are lighter, identical to each other and can soften under a hot iron.
Buttons for kurtas
Men’s and women’s kurtas usually have a short front placket with three to six buttons. Popular choices are:
- 14L–16L (about 9–10 mm) for fine cotton and silk kurtas.
- 18L (about 11.4 mm) for men’s cotton and linen kurtas.
- 2-hole for a clean look; 4-hole for a more traditional finish.
- White seep on white, pastel and printed fabrics; natural cream on khadi, beige and earthy tones.
Buttons for kurtis
Kurtis use buttons both for function and as decoration — a row down the front, on the sleeves, or as a feature on the yoke. Small 14L buttons in white or cream are the most versatile. For festive kurtis, slightly thicker, high-polish buttons catch the light beautifully, and single top-hole shell discs can be added as small hanging details on tie-ups and tassels.
Buttons for co-ord sets and shirts
Co-ord sets — shirt and trouser or shirt and skirt in the same fabric — are a fast-growing Surat category, especially for online sellers. Here the shirt drives the look. 18L 2-hole natural shell suits linen and cotton co-ords; white 18L 4-hole suits sharper, formal-looking sets. Larger 24L buttons can work on oversized shirt-jackets.
Matching the button to the print
Surat produces enormous variety in prints and embroidery. A simple rule helps: on busy prints, choose a plain, natural shade that does not compete; on plain fabrics, a brighter white or a thicker polished button becomes a design feature. When unsure, place two or three sample buttons on the fabric and photograph them in daylight — the right choice is usually obvious in the photo.
Sizes, quantities and wastage
Count buttons per garment carefully: a kurta may use four on the placket plus one spare, a kurti may use eight or more. Add a small allowance for wastage during attaching. When you order wholesale, grouping styles into a few standard sizes keeps prices lower and makes reorders easier.
Consistency for repeat styles
Bestselling kurtas are reordered again and again. Natural seep varies, so ask your supplier to sort for shade and to keep a record of your lot. At our unit, every bulk order is sorted for shade and thickness after polishing, and we match repeat orders as closely as natural material allows.

Packing and storing seep buttons
Seep buttons are harder than plastic but can still scratch if they rub against metal or each other for long periods. Store them in their sorted packets until use, label each packet with size and shade, and keep reference cards for every style. In a busy Surat unit with dozens of styles running at once, clear labelling saves hours of searching and prevents the wrong button going onto the wrong kurta.
Online listings for seep-button kurtas
If you sell kurtas online, use the words your customers search for. Many buyers type “mother of pearl buttons”, others “shell buttons” or “seep buttons”. Mention the buttons in the product title or first bullet point and add a close-up photo of the placket — it is one of the simplest ways to show quality before the customer touches the fabric.
For men’s kurta pyjama sets sold in wedding season, a slightly thicker 18L seep button with a high polish makes the set look noticeably richer at almost no extra cost per garment.
