Gujarat is one of India’s great textile states. Surat weaves and processes fabric on an enormous scale and stitches more ready-made garments every year; Ahmedabad remains a centre for shirting, denim and printed textiles; and cities such as Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar have their own garment workshops, wholesalers and boutiques. Across all of them, demand is rising for natural sea shell and mother-of-pearl buttons. This guide brings together what Gujarat buyers need to know to buy them well, directly from a manufacturer.
Seep, sipi, shell, MOP — one material
In Gujarati and Hindi trade talk you will hear seep or sipi; in tech packs, shell or MOP (mother of pearl). All of these mean a button cut from the hard inner layer of a natural shell. It is polished to a soft, pearly shine and every piece is slightly different. That natural character is why shell buttons are used on premium shirts, ethnic wear and designer clothing — and why imitations, however shiny, never look quite the same.
Which shell button for which garment?
- Formal shirts: white mother of pearl, 18L 4-hole on the front and 14L on collar and cuffs.
- Casual and linen shirts: natural cream shell, 18L–20L, 2-hole or 4-hole.
- Kurtas and kurtis: 14L–16L in white or cream, often 2-hole.
- Jackets, bandhgalas and Nehru jackets: 24L–32L, sometimes thicker for presence.
- Chaniya choli, dupattas and festive trims: single top-hole shell discs as latkans and hanging details.
Our standard range is 14L to 36L (roughly 9 mm to 23 mm). For millimetre specifications, send the number and we will match or cut to size.
City by city
Surat
High-volume shirt, kurta and ethnic-wear production. Shade-sorted lots and dependable repeat orders matter most. Read our detailed Surat page.
Ahmedabad
Premium shirting, denim shirts and womenswear. White MOP for formal, natural shell for chambray and denim. See the Ahmedabad page.
Rajkot, Vadodara and Saurashtra
Smaller garment units, uniform makers, wholesalers and a strong boutique culture. Mixed-size orders and retail packs are often a better fit here; our online shop covers smaller needs, while wholesale enquiries cover production quantities.
What separates a good supplier
Natural shell varies, so the real difference between suppliers is in finishing and sorting. Good buttons have centred, smooth holes, an even polish on both faces, consistent thickness for machine attaching, and a narrow shade range within each lot. Ask for samples, measure them, and line up a handful in daylight before you approve. Also ask whether the supplier can repeat the same lot next season — a trader buying whatever is available often cannot.
Shell buttons for Gujarat’s festive and ethnic wear
Navratri, weddings and Diwali drive a large share of Gujarat’s garment sales. Kedias, chaniya cholis, kurtas and Nehru jackets made for these seasons are bought for celebration, and details count. Shell buttons work well on festive wear in several ways: small white or cream buttons on kurta plackets give a refined finish; larger polished buttons become a design feature on jackets and kedias; and top-hole shell discs make attractive latkans and hanging trims on dupattas and cholis. Because festive production is concentrated into a few weeks, it is worth approving buttons and trims well before the season and placing bulk orders early, so that delivery is never the reason a lot misses the market.
Wholesalers and trim dealers
Gujarat’s trim wholesalers supply thousands of small tailors and boutiques. Dealers who want to stock genuine shell buttons can order popular sizes in bulk at wholesale pricing, in sorted shades that are easy to resell. Ask us for a suggested starter range based on the garments your customers make.
FAQs from Gujarat buyers
Can you deliver to smaller towns?
Yes. We ship by courier or transport anywhere in Gujarat; freight is quoted with the order.
Can wholesalers buy for resale?
Yes. Wholesalers and trim dealers can order in bulk at wholesale pricing.
Are shell buttons suitable for garments that are washed often?
Yes, with normal care. Shell is hard and heat-tolerant; very harsh bleach can dull it over time, so test samples in your wash process.
