Bhiwandi, just outside Mumbai, and Ichalkaranji, near Kolhapur, are two of India’s great powerloom towns. Their looms weave enormous quantities of shirting and suiting fabric, and a growing number of units now cut and stitch shirts themselves, selling to wholesalers, retailers and online sellers across the country. Most of these shirts use plastic buttons. But as more units build their own brands and move into premium lines, natural shell and mother-of-pearl buttons are becoming a practical way to stand out. This guide is for those shirt units.

From fabric to finished shirt

Units that started as weavers often know fabric better than anyone, but finishing details are newer territory. The button is one of the most visible: customers see it first and touch it every time they wear the shirt. On good shirting, a polyester button can make an otherwise fine shirt look ordinary. A shell button — cool, solid and softly lustrous — tells the customer the shirt is premium.

The standard shirt specification

  • Front placket: 18L (about 11.4 mm), 4-hole for formal, 2-hole for casual.
  • Collar and cuffs: 14L–16L (about 9–10 mm) in the same shade.
  • Sleeve placket: 14L.
  • Spare: one of each size sewn inside or attached to the tag.

That is roughly 12–15 buttons per shirt. White mother of pearl suits white, blue and pastel formal shirting; natural cream shell suits linen, checks and casual weaves.

A premium line without changing everything

You don’t need to switch your entire production. Start with one premium line — for example, your best cotton or linen shirts — finished with shell buttons and a label that says so. Sell it alongside your standard range at a slightly higher price and watch sell-through. Many units find the premium line moves faster than expected because retailers like having a better option to offer.

Machine sewing at volume

Bhiwandi and Ichalkaranji units run fast button-sewing machines. Shell buttons must be consistent in thickness and have clean, centred holes to avoid needle breaks. We sort every lot for thickness and shade after polishing; run samples on your own machines before approving bulk. If your machines need a particular hole pitch, tell us — we can drill to match on bulk orders.

Consistency across repeat orders

Shirt units reorder bestselling styles again and again. We keep your specification and lot reference so repeat lots match as closely as natural material allows. Keep an approved reference card and check each incoming lot against it.

Selling the upgrade to retailers

Retailers and online sellers respond to specific, believable claims. “Genuine mother-of-pearl buttons” on a hang tag or in a listing title is exactly that. A close-up photo of the placket shows the difference immediately. For marketplace sellers, it can help a listing stand out among near-identical shirts.

Care

Shell handles washing and ironing well. If shirts are garment-washed, attach buttons afterwards where possible or test samples through the wash. Avoid bleach, which can dull the polish.

Packing and labelling for retail

Shirts sold through wholesalers and retailers need clear labelling. Add a short line to your hang tag or inner label — “natural shell buttons” — and include a spare button in a small pouch. Wholesalers who see this detail find it easier to sell your shirts at a premium, and consumers who find the spare button reward the brand with repeat purchases.

Working through wholesalers and online

Many Bhiwandi and Ichalkaranji units sell mainly through wholesalers and, increasingly, through online marketplaces. For online listings, mention the button in the title or first bullet, and show a clear close-up photograph. Marketplace shoppers compare near-identical shirts, and a specific material claim can be the deciding factor.

A simple costing example

Suppose a shirt uses fourteen buttons. If shell costs a few rupees more per button than plastic, the extra cost per shirt is modest compared with fabric, stitching and packing. If the premium line sells at even a small price increase, the shell upgrade pays for itself. Work through this on your own numbers with a real quote: it often shows that the button is one of the cheapest ways to make a shirt look more expensive.

Moving from fabric seller to brand

Units that started by selling fabric and now sell finished shirts need a story. Natural shell buttons, a good hang tag and a consistent photograph style are the three cheapest steps to look like a brand rather than a commodity seller. Start with one range and build from there.

FAQs

Can I use shell only on the front placket?

You can, but matching collar and cuff buttons in the same shade gives a more consistent finish.

Do you supply wholesalers in these towns?

Yes. Trim wholesalers can order popular sizes in bulk, packed by size and shade.
