Mangaluru, or Mangalore, is best known as coastal Karnataka’s port and commercial city, but it also has a steady base of garment exporters, school and corporate uniform manufacturers, and a large community of skilled tailors serving Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and the surrounding districts. All of them need buttons, and a growing number want natural sea shell and mother-of-pearl buttons rather than plastic. This article explains what shell buttons are, which types suit uniforms and shirts, and how a Mangaluru unit can order them in bulk directly from a manufacturer.
A coastal city that knows shell
People on the Karavali coast have always known shells from the beach. A shell button takes the same idea to its most refined form: the hard, layered inner surface of a sea shell — mother of pearl, often called seep or sipi in Hindi — is cut into discs, drilled, shaped and polished until it carries a soft, natural shine. Each piece is slightly different, which is exactly what gives a garment its premium character. Shell buttons are also biodegradable, which matters to brands and institutions that are trying to reduce plastic.
Shell buttons for uniforms
Uniform makers often assume shell is only for luxury shirts. In practice, a well-made shell button is hard, heat-tolerant and does not melt under an iron, which plastic buttons sometimes do. For premium school blazers, hospitality uniforms, chef coats and corporate shirts, shell gives a better look and a longer life. Typical choices are:
- 14L–16L (about 9–10 mm) for collars, cuffs and lighter shirts;
- 18L–20L (about 11.4–12.7 mm) for front plackets on shirts and blouses;
- 24L–32L (about 15–20 mm) for jackets, blazers and overshirts;
- 4-hole for a classic, secure finish, 2-hole for a cleaner modern look.
For institutional orders, consistent shade across thousands of pieces is critical. We sort every lot by colour and thickness so that a full batch of uniforms looks uniform.
Shell buttons for garment exporters
Export units in and around Mangaluru that make shirts, dresses and resort-style clothing often receive buyer tech packs that call for natural buttons. A buyer may write “MOP 18L 4H, white, polished” or simply give a diameter in millimetres. We can read either. Send us the exact line from your tech pack and we will match it, or advise the closest standard size from our 14L to 36L range.
Shell buttons for tailors and boutiques
Tailoring shops and boutiques in Mangaluru, Udupi and Manipal increasingly offer natural buttons as an upgrade on kurtas, linen shirts and occasion wear. For these smaller buyers, a mixed pack of popular sizes is often better than a single large lot. Tell us what you sew most and we can suggest a sensible starter mix. Retail packs are also available through our online shop.
What to check before you buy
- Real material. Some “pearl buttons” in the market are polyester. Real shell feels cool and slightly heavy, and each piece shows natural layering.
- Clean drilling. Holes should be smooth and centred so that thread does not cut and machine needles do not snap.
- Even thickness. Important for automatic button-attaching machines and for a neat placket.
- Shade sorting. Ask how the supplier keeps a lot consistent, and whether they can repeat it next season.
Need something special?
Custom diameters, different thickness, hole spacing for specific machines, and polish level can all be discussed on bulk orders. Single top-hole shell discs are also available for trims, charms and craft use. See custom shell buttons for details.
Planning a uniform season with shell buttons
School and institutional uniform orders in coastal Karnataka tend to arrive in a rush before the academic year and before festival seasons. If you plan to use shell buttons, fix the specification early: decide the size for shirts and for blazers, choose 2-hole or 4-hole, and approve a shade sample before your fabric arrives. With the button approved in advance, you can place the bulk order as soon as quantities are confirmed and avoid last-minute substitutions with whatever plastic stock is available locally. Keeping a sealed reference card of the approved button in your office also makes it easy to check every incoming lot and to reorder the same button next year.
Common questions
Can shell buttons survive industrial laundering?
Shell is hard and heat-tolerant, so it handles ironing well. As with any natural material, very harsh bleach can dull the surface over time, so we suggest testing samples in your own wash process.
Do you supply small quantities?
For tailors and boutiques, retail packs are available online. Bulk minimums apply to wholesale pricing.
Which shade should I choose for white uniforms?
White mother-of-pearl gives the cleanest look on white and pastel fabric. Natural cream shell suits beige, khaki and earthy tones.
