Britain’s shirt-making and tailoring tradition — from Jermyn Street shirtmakers to bespoke tailors and modern menswear labels — has long treated mother-of-pearl buttons as the standard for a quality shirt. Alongside them, a new generation of sustainable fashion labels and independent haberdashers is looking for plastic-free, natural trims. This guide explains how UK shirt makers, tailors, fashion labels and haberdashery wholesalers can buy MOP and natural shell buttons wholesale, directly from our manufacturing unit in India.
Where MOP matters in British clothing
- Formal and business shirts — white MOP, 18L 4-hole on the front, 14L–16L on collars and cuffs; often a slightly thicker button for a premium hand.
- Casual and linen shirts — natural cream shell, 18L–20L, often 2-hole.
- Waistcoats and tailoring details — larger shell buttons as a feature on summer tailoring.
- Womenswear and occasionwear — rows of small matched buttons on blouses and dresses.
- Haberdashery retail — packed buttons for home sewers and dressmakers.
Sizes and thickness
Buttons are measured in ligne: 18L is about 11.4 mm, 16L about 10 mm, 20L about 12.7 mm and 24L about 15.2 mm. Our range runs from 14L to 36L. Thickness changes the feel of a shirt considerably; many premium shirtmakers prefer a thicker button that sits proud of the placket. Ask for samples in two thicknesses and choose by hand — it is a decision best made with the button on the cloth.
Grades and consistency
Mother of pearl is natural, so every button is slightly different. Buttons are graded by shade and clarity. A bespoke or premium shirtmaker usually wants a tight, bright white grade; a casual label may prefer a softer natural grade. Whatever you choose, consistency within a shirt and across a production run is essential. We sort every order for shade and thickness after polishing, and we keep your lot reference for repeat orders.
Prices, freight, duties and VAT
We quote in US dollars or pounds sterling, as agreed. Freight is charged separately per shipment based on weight and Incoterm (EXW, FOB or CIF). Samples and smaller orders travel by international courier; larger orders by courier or air freight. Import VAT, any customs duty and clearance charges in the UK are the importer’s responsibility unless agreed otherwise; check the current position with your courier or customs broker. We provide full export documentation with every shipment.
For haberdashery wholesalers and retailers
The UK has a strong home-sewing and dressmaking community. Haberdashery wholesalers can order popular sizes in white MOP and natural shell in bulk, packed by size and shade for carding or resale. Tell us your packing preferences when you request a quote.
Sustainability
For labels moving away from plastic, natural shell is a straightforward, biodegradable alternative to polyester buttons. Keep any claims specific and accurate — “genuine mother-of-pearl buttons” or “plastic-free buttons” — and ask us for any information you need about the material for your records.
Quality checklist
- Diameter and thickness within tolerance.
- Clean, centred holes — important for hand-sewn shanks and machine sewing alike.
- Even polish and a clean rim.
- Consistent shade within the approved grade.
Bespoke tailors and made-to-measure
Bespoke and made-to-measure shirtmakers often keep several grades in stock so customers can choose: a standard white MOP, a thicker premium cut and a natural cream for linen. A small tray of loose buttons at the fitting makes the upgrade tangible. We can supply mixed assortments across grades in wholesale quantities.
Planning around the seasons
UK labels usually develop spring/summer and autumn/winter collections months ahead. Approve buttons during development, then place bulk orders as soon as production quantities are fixed, so trims arrive before cutting starts.
Haberdashery packs for home sewers
Britain’s sewing community is large and loyal, and natural buttons are a popular upgrade for dressmakers and quilters. Wholesalers can repack our bulk buttons into small retail cards of six or eight, sorted by size and shade. Ask us to pack in counted bags to make carding faster.
FAQs
Can you supply buttons suitable for hand-sewn shanks?
Yes. Clean, centred holes and a rimmed or slightly dished face suit hand sewing; ask for samples of each profile.
Can you match an existing button?
Send a sample or detailed photos with measurements, and we will match it as closely as natural material allows, with samples for approval.
